The Skoda Superb is tipped for introduction in the first half of 2019 and won’t cost much more than the current Superb that starts from £21,000. That makes it £1,000 cheaper than the mechanically identical – but not as spacious – Volkswagen Passat, which begs the question ‘How much is that VW badge really worth?’

Skoda would be mad to make drastic changes to the Skoda Superb’s styling – it’s already one of the best-looking cars the company builds, although we’ll admit the pictures of this prototype don’t exactly show it in its best light. Changes, then, will be limited to a nip here and tuck there, with new head and tail lights and revised front and rear bumper. Expect Skoda to add a few new paint colours and a choice of new alloy wheels.

Inside, you can expect to find the Superb getting the same tidy-up as the outside with a new selection of interior trims, a revised central console and the likelihood that Skoda’s 12.3-inch digital display – which replaces the conventional dials behind the steering wheel – will be rolled out on more models, having only just been added to the range in 2018. The biggest change, however, is likely to be mechanical – or should that be electric-mechanical – because the Superb will be offered as a petrol-electric hybrid for the first time. Skoda hasn’t confirmed to carwow exactly what that will entail, but logic dictates that it’ll get the same powertrain as fitted to the Volkswagen Passat GTE plug-in hybrid, which shares the Skoda’s underpinnings. The powertrain’s combination of a 1.4-litre petrol engine and an electric motor produces 218hp, which should get the Skoda from 0-62mph in about seven seconds. That’s not far off hot-hatch performance, only in the Skoda you’ll also have an electric-only range of 31miles – the electric motor alone giving the Superb plenty of performance in town – and making it free from paying London’s congestion charge.

That’s impressive is any car and even more so in the Superb that has truly limo levels of passenger space and a massive boot in both hatchback and estate models.

The best value in New Skoda Superb 2020 is a base model with manual gearbox, but it’s still decently priced after adding fancy audio, leather, and a moonroof.
